About Troop 39

Troop 39 is a Scouts BSA troop chartered with All Saints Episcopal Church in Western Springs, IL. Our Troop is a member of Pathway to Adventure Council - Portage Creek District.

Our humble beginnings date back to the days of the world Scouting movement started by Robert Baden-Powell in the early 1900s. As the movement gained momentum in the United States, Troop 39 was one of the first Scout troops established in the Chicago Western Suburbs.

In the 1990s, the troop faced challenges and eventually ceased operations. However, in 2009, a group of dedicated Scouters revived Troop 39 to offer their sons crossing over from Cub Scouts.

The troop's logo, the Phoenix, symbolizes its resurgence and renewed spirit, having risen from the ashes. Troop 39 continues to thrive today for boys in the local community.

Camping with Troop 39

The outdoor experience is an essential part of being a Troop 39 Scout. Through camping, Scouts have the opportunity to develop self-reliance and leadership skills.

There are three types of camping that offered by our Troop:

Monthly Campouts

Troop 39 is dedicated to regular monthly campouts, a cornerstone of our program. Central to our approach is the patrol method, where small groups of 8 active Scouts form close-knit teams and experiencing Scouting together. They plan, hike, tent, cook, and eat as a unit, fostering deep bonds. Patrols organize their activities, cultivating leadership skills and promoting the advancement of all members. The patrol method not only strengthens the individual, but also builds a strong, cohesive troop.

Summer Camp

Each July, Troop 39 has an annual cherished tradition of attending Camp Owasippe in Twin Lake, Michigan. Scouts immerse themselves in a variety of activities, including handicraft, scoutcraft, shooting sports, and ecology-conservation programs. They have the opportunity to earn merit badges, such as aquatics on Big Blue Lake or wilderness survival deep in the woods. The week-long camp strengthens bonds within patrols as Scouts camp under the stars, their tents nestled beneath the towering trees. Scouts leave with lasting memories and deep sense of camaraderie between themselves.

High Adventure

For older Scouts who have completed 8th grade and earned the rank of Star, Troop 39 offers exciting High Adventure tours. These tours include canoeing in the Boundary Waters of northern Minnesota, trekking across the rugged terrain of Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico, and scuba diving to experience marine wildlife in the Florida sea. Scouts who participate in these High Adventure trips often describe them as unforgettable experiences that offer unique challenges that they will remember over a lifetime.

A Scout is Helpful

Each scout has a number of service hours they must perform for rank advancement, which include hours that are conservation related. However, service is not just something Troop 39 Scouts do to get to First Class or other rank they have as a goal.

Service is a part of giving back to the community we live in. Troop 39 Scouts take on projects such as:
